originally I wrote this in response to why
i have a Mexican wrestler in the comic. The question was originally posted in
the forums.. but as I continued to write I realized it sounded very much like
a rant and explanation for what underpower stands for.
It stands for chaos..
If no one has noticed, Underpower is populated by stereotypes. And they each represent a genre I loved as a kid growing up... and sort of still do. We have an elf [fantasy], a Japanese swordsman [manga/anime], Moses Gunn [black-sploitation], El Lucheron[mexican wrestling], Mr. Cynical [F.P.S games/Hong Kong action movies]. I love all these genres.. and so does vanishing. SO here we created a world that really doesn't know any borders... Old man and neko are just stereotypes I sort of see everywhere and want to make fun of. The point of the comic is parody. Parody of every genre possible. The world that Underpower takes place in is a universe devoid of sanity. If this plane of existence has any deity's it's Douglas Adams, Terry Gilliam and the Zucker Brothers.. and they all left the world unattended and those bastard lesser demons [me and vanishing] have taken over the playground! It's a world where too many dimensions have collided,
where giant mechs rub shoulders with orcs, where bishonen swordsman duke it
out with costumed villains in drag... wait.. that's manga! Where The Champion
eternal has become the eternal moron, where iron chef is actually a malevolent
group bent on world domination. A world with such defenders as the Justice league
of Elvis impersonators. Where the pope signal has replaced the bat signal. Cute
underage school girls strip in a psychedelic storm of colors to fight David
Bowie and that guy from flock of sea gulls. Where my neighbor Totoro is a floor
rug in "Old mans" Mansion. Where 70's sex machines put Their ho's
through college. A world where the Elf's home land has been invaded by the S.C.A!
A world where secret organizations make there base in the under water pyramids
of Wisconsin. Cute faery's terrorize the city and vicious aliens check the trades
for acting gigs. Welcome to Underpower folks... you smell that?
